Roy is currently serving as Professor of Leadership and Director of Alumni Ministries at Columbia International University (CIU has 156,000 alumni in over 144 countries).
Roy serves Christ by serving leaders. His passion engages him in helping leaders connect their hearts to the transforming power of God, catch God’s perspective for his church, and develop the essential skills of effective leadership. This passion is at the center of his teaching and mentoring of Master’s and Doctoral students, consulting with congregational leaders and coaching pastoral and parachurch leaders.
After obtaining his bachelor’s degree from East Tennessee State University in 1975, Roy worked as a church youth pastor and then as associate staff with Campus Crusade for Christ, where he helped establish a campus ministry at Appalachian State University. He was director of stewardship and director of the Ben Lippen Conference at Columbia International University from 1978 until 1983, when he was named assistant director of the Billy Graham Training Center at The Cove, Asheville, North Carolina. Responsible for planning, developing and promoting the training center, Roy led retreats and seminars and was a consultant on church effectiveness.
Roy then moved into pastoral leadership by serving as pastor of mission at Bent Creek Baptist Church in Asheville from 1986 to 1991. He assisted this rapidly growing congregation by providing direction and development of small groups, missions and evangelism ministries. From 1991 to 1997 he pastored Alliance Bible Fellowship in Boone, North Carolina. He joined the CBS faculty in July 1997.
